The first plastic was invented by Alexander Parkes in 1856. His development “Parkesine” was exhibited at the London International Exhibition in 1862 and imagined the future use of plastics for the creation of many new products. Polymers and plastics such as Polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene and polyethylene make up more than 80% of world production of Polymers and Plastics.
Polyethylene (PE) is mainly used to make bottles, containers, and packaging films. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is used to make pipes and siding for the construction industry. Polypropylene (PP) is used to make appliances, packaging products, clothing, and carpeting. The production of plastics and polymers continues to grow globally with current worldwide production of over 380 Megatons a year.
